The Webb Bridge experience
So it was some weeks ago when I took a stroll along the river beyond Crown Casino. I was playing tour guide once again and I have almost exhausted new places to take visitors to Melbourne. I had heard of a sculptural bridge sensually curving along the Yarra River linking the affluent Southbank development to the up and coming Docklands part of the city. The imagery of the bridge looks so surreal - I couldn't imagine that it was a built project, considering the state of 3d rendering in this day and age.

So I walked and walked, not really knowing where the bridge was or how far it would be from the casino... and then I saw it - it was surreal.

Designed by architects Denton Corker Marshall and artist Robert Owen, the pedestrian and cycling link between the two banks of the Yarra harmoniously compliments the development on both sides of the river. The tall slender blocks on both sides of the Yarra is soothed by the curves and delicate structure of the Webb Bridge.

The bridge won the architecture firm and the artist the RAIA Victorian Chapter’s top urban design prize, the Joseph Reed Award in 2005. On that occasion, the RAIA jury commented:
'The bridge is a functional and sensuous piece of urban sculpture which excites its users via its grace and beauty. Docklands is a vast precinct - buildings are tall, parks broad. Webb Bridge slows us down and provides us with intimacy and enclosure.'

Speaking on behalf of DCM, Director John Denton commented,
'We wanted to create a truly unique bridge for Melbourne that would be enjoyed by Melbournians and visitors alike. While having a practical use, we hoped that Webb Bridge would become a destination in its own right for people to take in the views of the Yarra and the city, or simply to enjoy the structure itself. We are delighted that its design has been recognised in this way.'
Check it out if you are in Melbourne. This is probably one of Melbourne's best kept secrets.
